Wesley R. “Sandy” Craig, 88, of Crawfordsville and formerly of Veedersburg, died 9:35pm Monday January 9, 2012 at Williamsburg Healthcare in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
He was born October 4, 1923 in Veedersburg the son of Clifford R and Laura Jane (Kiger) Craig. He married Joyce E. Wiggins June 11, 1946 in Port Neches, Texas.
Surviving family include his wife Joyce Craig, Crawfordsville; two daughters, Laurie (R.G.) Phillips, Earl Park, IN; and Lejuana (Rick) Ragsdale, Crawfordsville; two grandsons and two great-granddaughters. He is preceded in death by a sister Doris Grubb.
Mr. Craig graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1942 and attended Lamar College in Beaumont, Texas. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served with an anti-aircraft battalion during both WWII in the European Theater and the Korean War. During his enlistment he was also an instructor of anti-aircraft gun mechanics at Fort Bliss, Texas, and was voted best instructor by the West Point Cadets. He is a 60 year member of American Legion at Post #288 in Veedersburg and recently Post # 72 in Crawfordsville. He was employed as a machinist for many years at Olin & Flexel near Covington, IN. His hobbies included oil painting, vintage cars, and he was an avid reader. Family and friends were an important part of his life and he cherished the time he had to visit with them.
Celebration of Life Service will be 5:00 pm Saturday January 14, 2012 at d’Arlier Center 405 N Mill St Veedersburg with Pastor Tony King officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm Saturday and continue until time of service. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post #288. Wesley had chosen cremation and will be buried on their property in Texas. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorial contributions be given to American Cancer Society, Fowler Baptist Church, or Veedersburg Public Library.
