Doris Jean Janeway Cates, 84, of Veedersburg, passed away at her residence Thursday October 9, 2014.
Mrs Cates was born January 14, 1930 in Veedersburg the daughter of Roy Samuel and Anna Lou (Cox) Janeway.
She was a 1948 graduate of Veedersburg High School. She was married to Mitchell Shields November 3, 1951 and they divorced in 1984. She later married Lowell Cates of Kingman October 20, 1990; he preceded her in death in 1998.
Doris opened her beauty shop “Sterling Beauty Shop” January 1, 1950, and retired from the business in 1991. She had worked for Community Action driving the Mac Van from 1984 to 1998, and worked for Midland Meals at the old Covington Senior Center. She had been a member of the Sterling Christian Church, and more recently had joined and was attending the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving family include a son, Terry (Jan) Shields, Veedersburg; two daughters, Lea Ann (Tom) Taylor, Monticello; Marla Jean (Mark Ward-Bopp) Ward, Crawfordsville; six grandchildren, Bryan (Jessica) Shields; Eric (Brianne) Shields, Marci Shields, Hannah Taylor, Adam Hauk, Ryan (Alisha) Hauk; three step grandchildren, Meghan Ward-Bopp, Nicklas Ward-Bopp, Mark Jr. (Elaine) Ward-Bopp; six great-grandchildren, Kamden Shields, Krede Shields, Keegan Shields, Preston Shields, Harper Hauk, Addison Hauk; three step-great- grandchildren, Kylen McMullen, Ben Ward-Bopp, James Ward-Bopp; one niece, Tommilou (Butch) Corey; one nephew, Sam (Marianne) Brown.
Doris was preceded in death by two grandchildren, one great-grandson; and one sister, Janet Brown.
Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday October 12, 2014 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg with Pastor Greg McDonald officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm Sunday and continue until the time of service. Burial will follow service at Rockfield Cemetery.
