Richard Cartwright Barker, 79, of rural Veedersburg, passed away 10:35 pm Wednesday December 3, 2014 at St Vincent Hospital in Williamsport, IN. Mr Barker was born May 2, 1935 near Harveysburg IN, the son of Gerald Cartwright and Ruby (Childers) Barker. He married Margaret Louise Osborn June 1, 1957 at the home of Rev. Alfred Dobbs in Sterling IN. Surviving family include his wife, Margaret L. Barker, Veedersburg; a son, Richard Brett Barker (special friend, Wanda Lally), Veedersburg; a daughter, Tammy Lynn (husband, Darrell) Smith, Crawfordsville; two sisters, Marilyn (husband, James) Harwood, Kingman; Sue (husband, Jack) Dillon, Kingman; a grandson, Brandon Michael Hicks, Lebanon IN. Richard graduated from Kingman High School in 1953, after graduation he served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed for many years at Olin near Covington, retiring from there in 1978. He had also farmed for many years and retired from farming in 1997. He enjoyed being both at home and being outdoors. His hobbies included fishing, deer hunting, mushroom hunting, and both vegetable and flower gardening. More than anything he loved and enjoyed his family. Funeral service will be 10:00 am Saturday December 6, 2014 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg with Joe Buker officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 pm Friday December 5, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial will follow service at Coal Creek Cemetery near Stringtown IN with military honors provided by American Legion Post #288. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
