Gary Wayne Byers, Covington, IN, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015.
Gary was born in Danville, IL on October 12, 1955, to Ted and Elizabeth (Babe) Byers.
Gary attended grade school in Stone Bluff, Sterling, and Veedersburg. He graduated from Fountain Central in 1974, where he played sports throughout his school years, and lettered in football while in high school.
He married Molly Jo Kult on March 17, 1984, and she survives.
He leaves two children, a son, Rian (Brandi Polster) Byers of Bainbridge, IN, and a daughter, Rebekah (Joshua) Sizemore, of Newport News, VA.
And five grandchildren that he loved with all his heart, Ethan Hendrix, Covington, IN., Cameron Byers of Waveland, IN., Kaycie and Emmaleigh Sizemore of Newport News, VA. and grandson, Naithan Sizemore who passed away on November 24, 2013.
Two sisters, Nelda (James) Hollingshead and Kay Simonton, both of Veedersburg, and 2 brothers, Jim (Sandy) Byers of Crawfordsville, IN., and Larry Byers of Veedersburg, IN., and many, many nieces and nephews (great & great-great) also survive.
He also leaves his two best “buddies”, John Lewellen and Josh Freed.
Gary was the youngest of 13 children born to Ted and Elizabeth, and he was always sure to tell you that he was the “seventh” son.
Gary was larger than life, and a consummate story teller. He loved being around people, and didn’t know a stranger. He announced the Covington High School Football home games for a couple of years.
But his greatest joy was working with the different youth athletic teams in Covington. He helped coach both league baseball and football for many years, and even though he didn’t coach anymore, he umpired baseball every chance he got, and had in fact just completed a two day tournament in
Covington this past weekend. You could always find him at the park, field, or school gymnasium cheering on his “little buddies”.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, William Byers, Junior Byers, BradleyByers, and Clyde Byers, and four sisters, Mary (Dolly) Stembaugh, Betty Allen, and JoAnn Jeffries, and Sharon Rose Byers.
Gary was the most amazing man, and an even better husband. He didn’t know a stranger, and he touched many lives for the better.
