Rachel June Colbert

Rachel June Colbert, 81, of Brookston and formerly of Veedersburg, passed away 2:46 pm Thursday September 10, 2015 at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born September 19, 1933 in Upland, IN the daughter of Delbert Monroe and Mary Louise (Robbins) Lighty. Rachel married Fred Colbert February 27, 1954 and he preceded her in death June 9, 2014. She is also preceded in death by a grandson, Scotty Joe Sanders; granddaughter, Danielle Colbert; brother, Wayne Lighty, and sister, Mary Minks. Surviving family include, eight children, Dan R. Colbert of Florida, Brenda Sanders (husband: Joe) of Kingman, Sharon Shomaker (husband: Alan) of Chalmers, Fred E. Colbert (wife: Sharon) of Crawfordsville, Rachel M. West of Lafayette, David M. Colbert (wife: Marla) of Veedersburg, Rita Jordan (husband: Troy) of Veedersburg, Martha Rodriguez (husband: Anthony) of Monticello, sister, Vernice Elliott, Marion IN; brother, James Lighty, Sebring, FL. She is also survived by 33 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. Rachel graduated from high school in Daytona Beach FL. She attended New Beginnings Baptist Church in Monticello IN. Through the years she had always enjoyed going to church, gardening, playing bingo, and being a part of the Breakfast Club at the Apple Tree restaurant, she especially loved her grandchildren and going to the beach with them. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Monday September 14, 2015 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg with Pastor Jewell Gilley and Pastor James Furr officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon Monday and continue until the time of service. Burial will follow service at Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg.
