Howard L. Carter, 81, of Veedersburg, peacefully passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 5:31 p.m. at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. He was born on August 4, 1934 in Kingman, Indiana, the son of Roy J. and Hallie (Stembaugh) Carter.
Howard married Delores Wooten on January 2, 1954 in Cates, IN who passed on October 14, 1968. Howard later married Martha Isabel Lara on May 12, 1975 in La Ceiba, Honduras. She survives.
Other surviving family members include his children Jody Phelps, David Carter, Yessenia Girdler all of Veedersburg, Howard Leroy Carter Jr. (wife: Christina) of Elizabethtown, KY, Stacie Maynard of Covington, and sister Nellie Sheridan of Waynetown. Howard is also survived by eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, a son, daughter and granddaughter.
After graduating from Kingman High School in 1953, he became the owner and operator of Carter’s Wrecking Yard for over 60 years. He was a skilled craftsman, collected antiques, and restored antique vehicles. Howard was a member of the Veedersburg Church of God.
Howard found a great deal of satisfaction spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed taking drives and retelling stories. Howard was a quiet man with a compassionate heart. He loved God and always looked for ways to help his church and bring others to Jesus. He was a pillar of strength and will be missed by many.
Visitation will be held at the Veedersburg Church of God on Wednesday, September 16 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Virgil Moss officiating. Burial will follow at Cold Springs Cemetery near Veedersburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Veedersburg Church of God Food Pantry.
