Eugene D Clark

Eugene D. Clark, 96, of rural Covington, passed away 8:25 PM Thursday May 19, 2016 at Franciscan St Elizabeth Hospital in Crawfordsville IN. Gene was born September 19, 1919 in Roseville, Arkansas the son of William Stephen Morris and Hattie (Anderson) Clark. He married his wife of 70 years Mildred L Hinote November 3, 1945 in Covington, she preceded him in death one month ago on April 21, 2016. He is also preceded in death by 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and a great grandson Daniel Ditto. Surviving family include two daughters, Sherry (Harold) Oakes, Lake Wales, FL; Marilyn (Allen) Holt, Covington; a sister, Bessie Clary, Tillsonburg Ontario; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, seventeen great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gene served his country in the US Army in the European Theater during WWII. He was a Purple Heart recipient, along with the Normandy Campaign Battle Star, Northern France Campaign Battle Star, European African Middle Eastern Star, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. His first battle engagement was in Caumont France 7-11-1944, and he was wounded in action 7-29-1944 in Normandy France Hill 183 for which he received the Purple Heart. Throughout his life he had been employed by Edgar McKinney’s Construction, Veedersburg Street Commissioner, and General Motors in Tilton IL. His memberships include the DAV, American Legion Post #288, VFW in Covington; 20 years with the Veedersburg Volunteer Fire Department, and Veedersburg Rescue Squad. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Monday May 23, 2016 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg, Pastor Ryan Sowers officiating. Visitation is 5:00 – 8:00 pm Sunday May 22, 2016 at the funeral home. Burial will follow service at Rockfield Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post #288. Memorial contributions may be given to Veedersburg Fire Department or American Red Cross.
