J.D. Murphy, 81, of rural Veedersburg, passed away 10:30 AM Saturday December 10, 2016 at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was born January 15, 1935 in Danville, Illinois the son of Joseph Harold and Dorothy (Starnes) Crane. They have preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by two half-brothers, Dean Murphy and Mike Murphy.
Surviving family include two daughters, Rebecca Murphy, Veedersburg IN; Melissa (Robert) Hayden, Mansfield TX; two sons, Matthew (Sarah) Murphy, Newtown IN; Scott (Ami) Murphy, CA; and eight grandchildren.
J.D. graduated from Danville High School in 1952. He served his country in the US Army being honorably discharged in December 1962. He was employed at General Electric in Danville IL, retiring after 33 years of employment. After his retirement he had worked at several part-time jobs up until 2013, mostly as a courier for Centre Bank and St Vincent Hospital.
J.D. was a member of the VFW Post#3318 in Attica where he had been a part of the funeral honor detail. He was an amateur archeologist and had enjoyed hunting for Indian artifacts for many years. He enjoyed Revolutionary War era re-enactments, and had been a member of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment for 32 years.
Funeral service will be 3:00 PM Friday December 16, 2016 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg with Pastor Steve Padgett officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Friday at the funeral home and continue until the time of service. Burial will follow service at Osborn Prairie Cemetery near Veedersburg with military honors provided by VFW Post#3318 and the US Army. Online condolences at www.dickersonfuneralhome.com
