L. Gordon Meihls, 78,of Veedersburg, died 12:45 am Saturday November 27, 2010 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was born October 15, 1932 in Yeddo, Indiana the son of Lawrence E. and Myrtie G. (Massey) Meihls. He married Connie J. Prather February 16, 1957 in Danville, Illinois.
Surviving family include his wife, Connie Meihls, Veedersburg; two daughters, Tammy Pyle (husband, Dan) and Tori Current (husband, Scott), both of Veedersburg; a son Dan Meihls (wife, Sue), Draper, Utah; two brothers, Charles (wife, Donna) Meihls, Fairhope, AL; and Darrell (wife, Connie) Meihls, Oxford, IN; seven grandchildren Ashley Bowling (husband, Darin), Landon Pyle, Adam Current, Travis Meihls, Allison Current, Alexandria Meihls, and Justin Meihls.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Pat Sheets, Wynona Easter, Wanda Bennett, four brothers, Milton Meihls, Paul “Chatter” Meihls, Eston Meihls, and Ronnie Meihls.
Gordon graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1951. He then served his country 1951- 1955 in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the seaplane tender USS Pine Island. He was employed at Olin / Flexel for 39 years retiring from there in 1995. His memberships include the Sterling Christian Church, F.&A.M. Lodge #491, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine of Terre Haute, Fountain County Alcoholic Beverage Board, Veedersburg Re-development Board, American Legion Post #288 past commander and member of their honor guard, former member of O.E.S. and in 1977 he obtained his 33rd Degree in Pittsburg PA.
He was an avid sports fan, enjoying Nascar, I.U. Basketball, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs. He loved being outdoors mowing, mushrooming, camping, and fishing. For over 30 years he enjoyed being Santa Claus to many of the surrounding area children.
Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday November 30, 2010 at Sterling Christian Church 109 N Eagle St. Veedersburg, IN with Rev. Gary Johnson and Pastor Michael Trusty officiating. Visitation will be 3:00 – 8:00 pm Monday November 29, 2010 at Sterling Christian Church with Masonic service beginning Monday at 7:45 pm. Interment at Rockfield Cemetery in Veedersburg with full military honors provided by American Legion #288. Memorial contributions may be given to the Shriners Children Hospital.
