Carl Wayne Powell, 80, of Veedersburg, passed away Sunday morning July 29, 2018 at Franciscan St Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. He was born May 29, 1938 in Marshfield Indiana the son of Clifford J. and Susie (Ward) Powell. He married Jo Ann McAllister, his wife of nearly sixty years August 23, 1958; she preceded him in death June 5, 2018. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Jo “Robbie” Brown; five brothers, Paul, George, Jim, Jack, and Francis Earl Powell; and one sister Evelyn Ricketts. Surviving family include three sons, Wayne (Marsha) Powell, Gene (Deanna) Powell, Richard (Mary) Powell, all of Veedersburg, IN; two daughters, Valarie (Terry) England of Danville, IL, and Nancy (Edward) Franklin of Attica, IN; 5 granddaughters, 12 grandsons, and 49 great-grandchildren. Throughout his life Carl had been employed at Ross Gear in Lafayette; as an over the road truck driver, a heavy equipment operator; and he had farmed for a time in his life. He was a member of the Murat Shrine and the F. & A.M. Lodge in Covington, Indiana. In his younger days Carl had enjoyed riding bareback bucking horses and bulls in the local rodeos. He spent many years racing stock cars at the area race tracks including Cornell’s and Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Jungle Park, and Henry’s Speedway near Boswell Indiana. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, he especially enjoyed hunting with his many coonhounds over the years. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Tuesday August 7. 2018 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will follow service at Bonebrake Cemetery near Veedersburg.
