John W. Cotten Sr., 80, lifetime resident of Covington, IN passed away Sunday morning November 26, 2017. John was born May 6, 1937 in Covington, Indiana the son of Alva and Nellie (Darnell) Cotten. He married Phyllis June Felgenhauer December 31, 1956 in Covington, she preceded him in death February 10, 2010. He is also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Freeman and Jim Cotten; and two sisters, Sally Curtis and Pat Fletcher. Surviving family include three sons, John W. (Dianne) Cotten Jr., Phillip Allan (Gwen) Cotten, and Ron (June) Cotten, all of Covington; a brother, Bill Cotten, Covington; eight grandchildren, Phillip (Holly) Cotten Jr., Zachary (Rachel) Cotten, Jordan Cotten, Jarred (Alyssa) Cotten, Ronnie (Krista) Cotten, Kim (Josh) Freed, Alaina (Brandon) Cotten, Emilee (Ethan) Searcy; four great-grandchildren, Logun Freed, Keegun Freed, Piper M. Cotten, and Brynlee Dunham. John attended school in Covington. He was employed 31 ½ years at Hyster in Danville IL beginning as a machinist, but for many years he was employed as lead man on the layout (inspection) table. He also owned and operated Cotten’s Machine Shop in Covington for over 40 years. He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church in Covington, the Illiana Antique Car Club, and the Illiana Antique Power Association. He enjoyed both working on and driving his antique cars and Cushman Scooters. For many years after his retirement he also enjoyed hosting morning coffee hour at his shop for his many friends. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Friday December 1, 2017 at Maranatha Baptist Church in Covington with Pastor Kenneth Jones officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday November 30, 2017 at Maranatha Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mt Hope Cemetery.
