Richard Joseph Townsend

Richard Joseph Townsend, 72, of rural Veedersburg, passed away at his residence Monday January 11, 2021.

Richard was born January 13, 1948 in Danville, Illinois the son of the late Robert and Mary (Salts) Townsend.  He married Linda Sue McKinney August 21, 1969 in Covington, IN. She preceded him in death March 8, 1996.

Surviving family include a son, Scott D. (Denise) Townsend, Veedersburg, IN; a daughter, Sabrina (Jimmy) Thomas, Georgetown, IL; a sister, Lois (Paul) Boswell ; six grandchildren, Dakota Townsend, Breann Townsend, Tabitha Lomax, Cayla Fuller, Donna McNeely, Vanessa Bauer; and several great grandchildren.

Richard graduated from Covington High School in 1965. After high school he enlisted in the US Navy for four years and served during the Vietnam War.  After his time in the Navy he enlisted in the U.S Air Force; an enlistment that would continue for 20 years of service up until his retirement.

After his retirement from the military Richard worked at a few different jobs around the area; he also enjoyed spending his time working with wood, fishing, and air boating in Florida. He enjoyed working with horses for a time, and he especially enjoyed his most recent dog Taz. More than anything he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday January 14, 2021 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM Thursday. Burial will follow at Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg with military honors provided by American Legion Post #288. Memorial contributions may be given to Wounded Warriors.
