Sandra “Sonnie” M. Johnston, formerly of North Salem, IN, passed away 10:52 AM Thursday November 28, 2024 at Independence Village in Zionsville, IN. She was born July 15, 1945 in Veedersburg, Indiana the daughter of Kenneth "Nip" and Vivian "Bink" Brewer Keeling. 

She married James Melvin Simpson in 1963 and he preceded her in death on October 31, 1967. Together they had a son, Brett. She married Marshall C. Johnston on May 31, 1969. Together they had a daughter, Marchel. They were married for over 50 years; Marshall preceded her in death on March 12, 2021. 

Sonnie was a member of North Salem Christian Church. First and foremost, our momma was a child of God. She had many roles throughout her blessed life: daughter, sister, friend, niece, aunt, wife, mom and momo. Sonnie leaves behind her two children Brett (Grace) Johnston, Tangier IN; Marchel (Troy) French, Waynetown IN; two sisters, Bonnie Helms, Pacific, MO; Shay Andrews, Chula Vista, CA; 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. 

Besides her two husbands she was proceeded in death by her parents, brothers Arthur Keeling, Dean Keeling, Dick Keeling, a sister Jolynn Slazas and a granddaughter Taylor Marshell Johnston.

Sonnie graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1963. She was the first woman firefighter in Eel River Township, North Salem, IN. She served this community as both a firefighter and EMT for many years. She had also worked in the Hendricks County Assessor’s Office for many years. 

A private service will be held at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg IN. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contributions be given to North Salem Christian Church 6 North California Street North Salem IN 46165. Online condolences at www.dickersonfuneralhome.com
